Farhannah Dancers

Sharlynn

I have a lifelong passion for Dance, growing and evolving from when I was a little girl disco dancing in the living room, through my explorations of ballet, jazz, modern, and African dance, to my current involvement in the realm of Middle Eastern dance. During the 1990s, I studied ballet, jazz, and modern dance styles, and also performed as a solo dancer and twirler of sabers and rifles in several touring groups based in Florida: Alliance of Miami Winterguard, and the drum and bugle corps Suncoast Sound of Tampa and Magic of Orlando. Karl Lowe was the choreographer and artistic director of both drum corps groups and is one of my greatest sources of movement and performance inspiration. I am eternally grateful to him for providing the intense, euphoric dance experiences I enjoyed under his direction, which cemented my desire to keep dance in my life. I began my study of Middle Eastern dance with Bahijah in 2000, and now have the joy of performing with the Farhannah Dance Troupe at festivals, workshops, weddings, and farmer's markets, as well as dancing solo at Farah’s restaurant. I've had the good fortune of taking workshops with other wonderful dancers as well, my favorites being Margo, Shoshanna, and Ansuya. I'm thrilled that my dancing journeys have led me here and I hope to continue learning, growing, and sharing through this passionate dance form. When not dancing, I'm often working on my PhD research on the environmental components of economic development in Thailand. I'm also constructing a house and gardens with my partner Otto in our 40 acres of forest. When I can find extra bits of time, I also enjoy canoeing, curling up with a good sci-fi novel, traveling, and attending all types of dance performances.
